Calico Projects
A new set of storytelling murals In Deptford
I was asked to create a collection of artworks to brighten up a new Calico Projects building in Deptford South East London. The site’s location gave me a huge amount of historical subject matter to get my inspiration from.
From Francis Drake and the Golden Hinde to John Evelyn, the possible invention of the Jolly Roger and an ill fated whale – I managed to fit a fair bit into the shutters and awkward rooftop plant room.
The whale is my favourite bit, it’s my first attempt at an anamorphic painting and although the ridged surface made it a lot more challenging it’s worked well and seems to turn heads.
“The building in question is surrounded by residential properties and every person who I have spoken to has talked about how his work has elevated the area. One local told me he was inspired to learn more about local history as a result, which was a bonus we weren’t expecting”
